QUEBEC -- Michael Bournival is making a case for starting the season with the Montreal Canadiens. Pete Rose Grey Jersey . The hard-working winger had two goals in his first pre-season game last weekend and followed that with a goal and an assist as the Canadiens downed the Carolina Hurricanes 6-0 on Friday night. "In the first game I was nervous at the start," said Bournival, the captain of the 2012 Memorial Cup champion Shawinigan Cataractes who spent last season with AHL Hamilton. "Im getting more and more comfortable on the ice as it goes along. "Its up to me to keep that going." Greg Pateryn and Alex Galchenyuk scored in a 26-second span early in the first period, while David Desharnais, P.K. Subban and Max Pacioretty also scored for Montreal (1-1-1) before a disappointing crowd of 10,139 at the 15,00-seat Pepsi Colisee. Peter Budaj, with 11 saves, and Dustin Tokarski, with 13, shared the shutout. Cam Ward went all the way in goal for the Hurricanes (0-3-3), who will play a fourth game in as many nights when they face the Canadiens again on Saturday night at the Bell Centre. He faced 29 shots. Bournival was named first star of the game, but a handful of rookies were impressive, including defenceman Magnus Nygren, who had two assists. But coach Michel Therrien said it was veterans who led the way. "The young players seized the opportunity to show what they can do," said Therrien. "But it was the veterans who set the tone of the game and thats positive. "The Desharnais-Pacioretty line was very good at both ends of the ice. I also liked P.K. Subban with Josh Gorges, who played well together." Desharnais, who comes from Laurier-Station near Quebec City, and Pacioretty each had two points. "I always play well in this rink," said Desharnais, who visited often when he was in junior hockey with the Chicoutimi Sagueneens. "I have good memories here. "Im trying to be better each time out and Ive noticed some improvement. I feel Im quicker (than last season)." Montreal was all over Carolina in the opening period and beat Ward four times on 10 shots. Pateryn scored from the point on a Desharnais feed at 3:30 and Magnus Nygrens stretch pass gave Brandon Prust a breakaway that was stopped, but Galchenyuk followed in to score at 3:56. Desharnais banked a shot in off Wards pass from behind the net at 11:07 and Bournival, with his third in two pre-season games, fired in a Patrick Holland pass at 15:41. Montreal had a two-man advantage when Subban, who also had two assists, blasted one in from the high slot in the second frame. Pacioretty was awarded a penalty shot when he was tripped by Mike Komisarek and he beat Ward high to the stick side 4:22 into the third frame. Therrien was in experiment mode, moving Galchenyuk to centre from left wing and using Swedish prospect Sebastian Collberg on right wing with Desharnais and Pacioretty. Djokovic beat Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland 6-1, 6-4 Friday, while Federer overcame Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. Top-ranked Rafael Nadal also moved into the semifinals with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Richard Gasquet of France and will play defending champion David Ferrer, who rallied past Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic 4-6, 7-5, 6-3.DENVER - With the regular-season schedule winding down, the Toronto Maple Leafs gave their playoff hopes another boost. Nikolai Kulemin had two goals, and Phil Kessel and Tyler Bozak also scored, leading the Maple Leafs past the Colorado Avalanche 4-3 on Thursday night for their third straight win. The Maple Leafs increased their points total to 78, three behind idle Buffalo for the Eastern Conferences final playoff berth. Toronto has seven games remaining. "We just have to get some wins ourselves and sooner or later well get some help," Toronto defenceman Luke Schenn said. The Maple Leafs have been one of the NHLs hottest teams in the last seven weeks, going 15-6-5 since returning from the all-star break. "It would have been nice to get a couple more wins at the beginning of the season to give ourselves a better chance right now," Maple Leafs goalie James Reimer said. "Were happy with the way were playing right now. I just hope we can keep it going." Colorado, meanwhile, saw its modest two-game winning streak snapped on a night when the Avalanche lost two more players to injury. Defenceman Ryan Wilson did not return after suffering a second-period knee injury. Colorado also lost Mark Olver, part of the teams top line, to a head injury midway through the first period. He was levelled by Mike Komisareks hard check near the red line and lay sprawled for several moments before crawling off the ice. Even before Olver managed to reach the Colorado bench, teammate Cameron Gaunce, recalled from Lake Erie of the American Hockey League earlier Thursday, was exchanging blows with Komisarek that resulted in 5-minute penalties for both for fighting. Colorado coach Joe Sacco said while it appeared that Komisareks hit was legal, the loss of Olver early in the game was another setback for the Avalanche in an injury-plagued season. "Losing him doesnt help because hes been playing very well and he gives us a lot of energy," Sacco said. "Hell be re-evaluated ((Friday) morning, along with Ryan Wilson. Pete Rose Jersey. " The Maple Leafs went up 4-2 on a goal by Kessel that he drove past goalie Peter Budaj, who had replaced starter Brian Elliott at the beginning of the third period. Elliott, who had to have some emergency repairs on his skates, returned shortly after Kessels goal at 3:02 of the third. After officials waved off an apparent goal by Torontos Mike Brown, ruling the puck had been kicked in, the Avalanche again closed to within a goal on a score by Matt Duchene. He beat Reimer with a rebound shot at 11:55 of the third. But in the final minute, with Elliott pulled in favour of an extra attacker, Reimer turned away a flurry of shots by the Avalanche. "We found a way to claw back into it and we had a couple of chances when we pulled the goalie," Sacco said. "But we werent able to capitalize. I like the fact that we played to the end, but catch-up hockey is tough to play in this league." Toronto took a 3-1 lead when Tyler Bozak redirected Luke Schenns shot into the open side of the net past Elliott at 9:37 of the second period. Colorado got back within a goal 3 minutes later when their power play delivered a score by Ryan OReilly. Colorado opened the scoring on Daniel Winniks short-handed goal 5:55 into the game, but Toronto went in front on a pair of goals by Kulemin. Kulemins first goal at 10:32 of the first went into the net off Elliotts pads. He also emerged with the puck following a scramble behind the net, squeezing off a shot that got past Elliott in the final seconds of the period. Notes: Winniks first-period goal was his 11th of the season, tying his career high set as a rookie while with Phoenix in 2007-08. ... The Maple Leafs and Avalanche met for the only time this season in what was the last of Colorados 18 meetings against Eastern Conference opponents. ... Scoring his 27th and 28th goals of the season, Kulemin tied Mikhail Grabovski for second on the team, one behind the club leader, Kessel. Cheap Jerseys Wholesale Jerseys Wholesale Jerseys Cheap Jerseys Cheap NFL Jerseys Cheap Jerseys China Wholesale Jerseys ' ' '
