play in and lets work on the venue now.

ATLANTA -- The Atlanta Hawks will not be sold to California developer and pizza chain owner Alex Meruelo. Cedric Peerman Bengals Jersey . In fact, the NBA team is no longer on the market. The Hawks ownership group, headed by Bruce Levenson and Michael Gearon Jr., said Friday that the agreement for Meruelo to buy the team had been mutually terminated by both sides. Just last week, there were reports the NBA was delaying approval of sale because of concerns about Meruelos finances, though he insisted he had enough money to purchase the team and run it in a first-class manner.. Meruelo, the son of Cuban immigrants, was poised to become the NBAs first Hispanic team owner and acquire operating rights to Philips Arena, with Levenson and Gearon remaining in a minority role. Instead, the group known as Atlanta Spirit will remain in charge of the team it has owned since 2004, when it acquired the Hawks and the NHL Thrashers from Time Warner. The group stepped in after a proposed deal with Dallas businessman David McDavid fell through. "The Atlanta Hawks are no longer for sale," Levenson said in a statement issued by the Hawks. "Were excited to remain as owners of the Hawks and are committed to building on our string of four straight playoff appearances." The owners came under heavy criticism in Atlanta after they quickly worked out a deal to sell the Thrashers to a group in Winnipeg for a reported US$170 million. The Canadian group moved the team to the Manitoba capital and renamed it the Jets. The Hawks said there would be no additional comment on why the purchase agreement announced in August had been terminated, citing a confidentiality clause. Neither Levenson nor Gearon immediately responded to emails. Meruelo issued a statement indicating that the ongoing labour dispute between the owners and the players, which delayed this weeks scheduled start of the regular season, helped scuttle the deal. "I want to thank the Atlanta community who welcomed me with open arms. I am humbled and blessed by their warmth and hospitality," Meruelo said. "Basketball is my passion, but professional basketball is a business. Although all parties negotiated in good faith, we were not able to reach a mutually satisfactory agreement on some key issues given the current uncertainty surrounding the labour issue. As a result, we mutually decided to terminate the deal effective immediately." Meruelo hasnt given up on becoming the NBAs first Hispanic owner. But it wont be with the Hawks. "I have great respect for the owners of the Hawks and the league and remain committed to fulfilling my dream of owning an NBA team," he said in the statement. "I look forward to that opportunity in the future." At a news conference in early August, shortly after the deal was announced, an emotional Meruelo put on a red Hawks cap and fought back tears as he talked about the significance of becoming the NBAs first Hispanic team owner. "It means a lot," the 48-year-old said. "Me being Hispanic, being first is really touching. I hope to do the right thing. I just want to make sure I make them proud." Growing up, he wanted to be a player. "I wasnt quite fast enough, tall enough or quick enough, so those dreams didnt quite get me that far," Meruelo said. "But those dreams brought me the burning desire to be involved in the NBA. Its something Ive always wanted my entire life to somehow be a part of the NBA." Meruelo never considered buying the Thrashers before they moved to Winnipeg, and he acknowledged that purchasing an NBA team during the lockout was a concern. "Youre always hesitant, right?" Meruelo said. "Its the unknown that makes you uncomfortable, but at the same time I just see a tremendous amount of opportunity and growth in this sport." He heads the Meruelo Group, a Downey, Calif.-based investment firm. The firm recently acquired the Grand Sierra Resort and Casino in Reno, Nev., for a reported $42.45 million. Meruelo also founded La Pizza Loca, which has over 50 franchised and company-owned restaurants in Southern California, catering to the Latino community, according to the company website. "Its really a dual thing, the opportunity and the love of the sport that brought me so close to this," he said. "I would say Im a very hands-on individual. Im very tied in to every business Im involved with. I will do no different here." Kevin Zeitler Bengals Jersey . The six-year-old Irish-bred took the lead coming off the final turn and never looked back, defending his title at the $1-million Pattison Canadian International on Sunday. Marcell Dareus Bills Jersey . Hamilton, the 2008 champion, started sixth on the grid. The British driver leapt to fourth on the opening lap before it was red-flagged, and suspended for an hour, following a crash involving 2007 champion Kimi Raikkonen of Ferrari and Felipe Massa of Williams.Canada will have home-court advantage in its bid to stay among the worlds best tennis countries. Canada will host Colombia in a Sept. 12-14 tie, with the winner starting Davis Cup play in the World Group next year. The location of the best-of-five competition has yet to be announced, but hosting the tie is a definite advantage for Canada, says the team captain. "The number one thing I think we were hoping for was to play at home," Martin Larendeau said Tuesday on a conference call. "Weve seen over the last few years when we play at home, our odds increase dramatically." Canada beat both Spain and Italy indoors in Vancouver last year to reach the semifinals for the first time in history before bowing out to Serbia. The Davis Cup, founded in 1900, is the touted as the largest annual international team competition in sport with 122 countries participating in 2014. A tie consists of two singles matches on the first day, a doubles match on Day 2 and concludes with a pair of singles matches on the third day. The ascension of Milos Raonic of Thornhill, Ont., and Vasek Pospisil of Vancouver in mens singles, as well as the work of tireless and decorated doubles veteran Daniel Nestor of Toronto, turned Canada into a consistent Davis Cup threat in recent years. Canada started this years Davis Cup in the World Group for a third straight year. Beset by injuries, however, Canada lost 4-1 to Japan in Tokyo in February. Raonic and Pospisil didnt play at all and Frank Dancevic of Niagara Falls, Ont., retired in the second set of a singles match on the final day because of a stomach injury. So Japan advanced to the quarter-finals, while Canada must win the playoff versus Colombia to start 2015 in the World Group again. Canada fell 4-1 to Colombia in Bogota the last time the two countries met in 2010. Because that tie was played on the road, its Canadas turn to host the South Americans. The Canadians need to leverage a friendly, familiar venue into a victory, lest they drop into Americas Group 1 qualifying matches next year. "I dont think anybody wants to go back to Grooup 1, where we would have to face a lot of South Americans teams and away ties and stuff," Larendeau said. Brandon Thompson Bengals Jersey. "We have to make the most of this window to play a South American team at home. Everyone is keen on us staying in the World Group. "Our reference for us is going to be the matches last February and last April when we played at home. I think its going to bring a lot of good feelings back to play at home and hopefully that will put the guys in a productive frame of mind." Tennis Canada will announce the location at a later date. Larendeau says he and the athletes will have some input into the location, but not the final say. "The good thing about playing in September is we have options to play indoors or outdoors. Its something we dont have when we play in February or even April," the Laurendeau said. "We need the players feedback to see how they think theyre going to match up in altitude, sea level, indoors, outdoors. The players and myself have a bit of a say on where wed like to play, but it doesnt come down to that. "Theres executive decisions and theres also a marketplace, theres also promoting the game in cities or in areas that are not able to see a lot of tennis. Theres a lot of factors that go in, but our job is to come up to the board of directors and president and say these are the conditions wed like to play in and lets work on the venue now." Vancouver, Toronto, Calgary and Montreal are previous Canadian host cities of World Group ties. Canada is seeded No. 8, while Colombia is ranked No. 26 in Davis Cup. Raonic is currently No. 11 in ATP mens singles and Pospisil is 28th. Colombia doesnt have a singles player in the worlds top 50, but the doubles team of Juan-Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah is formidable. That duo lost the final of last months Sony Open to world No. 1 Bob and Mike Bryan of the U.S. "I think Colombia is a very tough team," Larendeau said. "They have a lot of depth, they have an excellent doubles team and they have a lot of experience in singles play." cheap nfl jerseys cheap jerseys cheap jerseys cheap jerseys cheap nfl jerseys wholesale jerseys ' ' '
