Minister Doyle promotes Irish trade in China

Minister Andrew Doyle has said the Chinese market is important to cultivate in the face of Brexit.

The Chinese Import and Export Expo (CIIE) in Shanghai this week will be well-represented by an Irish presence.

A delegation will be led by Minister for Business Heather Humphreys, which will include Minister of State for Agriculture Andrew Doyle, Bord Bia and 11 Irish meat and dairy companies.

“China is our third most important export market, with total agri-food exports of almost €1 billion last year,” Minister Doyle said.

It is our second biggest market for both dairy and pigmeat

“It is our second biggest market for both dairy and pigmeat, and a significant market for seafood exports.”

He said it would provide a unique opportunity to communicate directly with Chinese buyers.

CEO of Bord Bia Tara McCarthy added that it would provide a way to “leverage” Ireland’s reputation.

Bord Bia will leverage this opportunity

“CIIE provides a unique platform to meet both political and commercial stakeholders of significance in the Chinese market. Working in partnership with the Department, Bord Bia will leverage this opportunity to further build our industry’s reputation in the market,” McCarthy said.

The delegation in Shanghai follows on from a trade mission to Indonesia and Malaysia led by Minister for Agriculture Michael Creed last week.
