Our commonly used QR code online...

Before QR codes, barcodes were widely used. At 8:01 a.m. on June 26, 1974, at a Marsh supermarket in Troy, Ohio, a customer scanned a barcode to pay for a pack of Wrigley's chewing gum.

By the way, the co-inventor of barcodes, American IBM engineer George Laurel passed away on December 5, 2019 at the age of 94.

Barcode technology is a kind of linear scanning, that is, the barcode is scanned from one direction. The information content of the barcode is not large enough, but it occupies a large area, which is not suitable for the needs of modern small business online payment processing development. To this end, people began to develop encoding and decoding technologies with a smaller footprint and more information, and the two-dimensional code was born.

As the name suggests, QR codes are scanned from both vertical and horizontal dimensions. It occupies a small area, but it contains much more information than a barcode.

There are many encoding and decoding techniques for QR codes. In 1994, Japan's Denso Wave company developed "Quick Response Code" (QR Code) for production tracking on automobile production lines. "QR Code" has become the ISO/IEC18004 standard, and anyone can use it for free. Now we use two Dimension code, mostly "QR Code".

On May 15, 1995, Andrew Longacre Jr. and Robert Hess also applied for a patent for two-dimensional code encoding and scanning in the US patent Office, improving the two-dimensional code encoding and scanning decoding technology. The patent application was filed in 1997. Approved on January 7, 2008. Later, the patented technology became the ISO/IEC 24778:2008 standard.
