Fixed: chkdsk Command Stuck on Windows 10

When you are using a PC, you may notice that with constant use there is some reduction in the processing speed. Due to this reduction in speed some times you have to close some application forcefully to remedy the stuck application. It is a widely acceptable and used idea, but the best way is the use of chkdsk command to resolve the error and fix some corrupted files. After using this command, you will observe that the OS is more stable and works more smoothly.

There are many reports posted by the users that when they use the chkdsk command, it got stuck at 0% (generally), and the further process can’t be done. As per the recommendations, users should not turn off the computer because it can lead to some permanent damage to hard disk. That being the reason, users have to wait for a long time to complete the process.

If you think that it is stuck then you wish to resolve the issue then you can follow the mentioned steps in this article.

Time Taken to Complete the process by chkdsk:

The disk checkup operation is much simplified in the Windows 10, because of the different checking method of the errors.

This utility has redesigned by the new filing system which is called ReFS. This filing system requires the Online connection to repair the disk error.

This System uses the resiliency model, which works slightly different from the standard model. Due to this resiliency, the periodical disk checkup is performed, and it reduces the manual checking process. This periodical checkup searches for errors, lost clusters, and bad sectors in the filing system.

Fixing the Stuck chkdsk

  • You have to use the Windows 10 CD install or repair (by the recovery image).
  • Now you can see a CD name mentioned on the screen, Enter it and restart your computer.
  • When your system is started again, then you have to run the cmd command from the main window by clicking the Shift + F10 keys.
  • Now, enter the regedit command and run it, which will open the Registry Editor.
  • You have to reach out to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
  • Then you have to select the option Load Hive.
  • Now, you need to follow the path to C:WindowsSystem32Config.
  • Here, you have to click on the System. If you have to enter a name, then you can enter any name as per your thinking and mindset.
  • Now you have to navigate yourself to the DisksysControlSet001ControlSession Manager, where you have to click on the BootExecute.
  • When the Boot Execute opens, then you have to change the autocheck autochk * /rDosDeviceC: into autocheck autochk *
  • Now you have to exit from the Registry Editor through the Disksys and selecting the Unload Hive.

Now, you should check whether the process made some improvement or not by running the chkdsk c:/r

Running the Cleanup of Disk

To resolve the issue, you can try by removing the temporary files in the systems. If you choose to follow this path, then you have to follow these steps:

  • Launch the Start Menu.
  • Please search for the  Disk Cleanup  command and click on it from the result list.
  • Now, you have to make a choice, which one you wish to clean, then you have to click on OK.
  • Now, select the file types you wish to remove (if you don’t know about the type of file then you can see the description of that file type by clicking on it).
  • Now, tap on,  OK .
  • Check whether there is an improvement in the chkdsk command running time or not.
  • After the following these two methods, you can see the improvement in your CPU's processing speed and the running time of chkdsk command.
