How to Personalize Home Page Icons for iPhone

iPhone users never had such great command over the home screen until iOS 14 arrived. All the credit goes to the home screen widgets, which has made our lives simpler. Widgets enable you to expand the menu of an app without actually launching the same.

However, some users are thinking way ahead than the others. As everyone’s well aware that the icon of the applications cannot be changed on an iPhone, some of the third-party apps let you do the same, others don’t allow it. Interestingly, you can personalize the icons with the help of the Shortcuts App and the App Library feature. Sounds fun, right?

This piece of information might have tickled you but don't get this wrong! You cannot personalize the actual icon, instead, you can create a shortcut for the app and customize the icon for the same. This might sound confusing for now; however, once you get a hold of it, it'll seem much more enjoyable.

It is essential to note that whenever you use the custom icons to launch an app, you'll be taken to the Shortcuts app first, followed by the intended app.

How to Create Custom Home Page Icons on Your iPhone?

The steps to create custom home page icons for applications using the Shortcuts app are:

  1. Launch the 'Shortcuts' app on your Apple device.
  2. Tap on the '+' icon on the top-right corner of the screen.
  3. Click on the 'Add Action' button.
  4. Select the 'Scripting' option from the menu.
  5. Click on the 'Open App' button.
  6. Select the 'Choose' field in the next window.
  7. Select the name of the app for which you want to create a customized icon.
  8. Tap on the 'Ellipsis' icon on the top-right corner of the screen.
  9. Assign a name to your shortcut and click on the 'Add to Home Screen' option.
  10. Write the name of the shortcut in the space under the 'Home Screen Name and Icon' section.
  11. Click on the icon under the 'Home Screen Name and Icon' section.
  12. A pop-up menu will open. Select the 'Choose File' or 'Choose Photo' option.
  13. Go to the location of your file or photo and select the same.
  14. Hit the 'Add' button on the top-right corner.

The shortcut of the app will be created and present on the Home Screen. Next, you'll have to hide the app, and the steps are:

  1. Press and hold on the app icon until the Home Screen starts jiggling.
  2. Select the 'Remove App' option from the pop-up menu.
  3. Click on the 'Remove from Home Screen' option in the confirmation dialog box.

This is it! It is an easy and fun process while you personalize an icon for an app using Shortcuts. Make sure you update your iPhone to iOS 14 before trying to customize app icons.
