Why You Should be Using a Password Manager in 2021

 password manager

Change is inevitable, and this applies to everything, even the internet. The Internet in 2021 is quite a different place than it used to be a year ago. Those days are gone when people only visited a handful of sites, and other things were neatly organized in your book. But now, people visit dozens of websites in a single day, or we can say within hours. Many times, people sign up for a new account too. Online surveys suggest that, on average, an internet user has between 50 and 200 online accounts. The disadvantage of this is that most of us had at least one of these accounts unknowingly compromised or breached in recent years.

But don’t worry, we have some good news for your password managers who are universally acclaimed to safeguard our account while also improving online security. But are they effective, and should you have them? We will answer some of these questions right here. So, let’s dive in.

What is a Password Manager?

Putting it simply, Password Manager is an app and a browser extension that generated a unique password for each of the online accounts. Your login details are stored in a vault and can only be accessed through one master password.

We know you are still not fully sold on the idea of keeping all your passwords in one place. Keeping all the credentials in one place can be potentially dangerous too. Because the password manager could ever get compromised, you can lose everything.

At first, we were a little concerned too, but after doing some digging. We found out that the password manager utilizes zero-knowledge encryption. This means that nobody can access your data without the vault’s master password. Not even the companies that host your encrypted data.

How can you choose the right password Manager?

The first thing you should keep in mind while choosing the password manager is that you will be able to entrust your credentials to this password manager.

Nowadays, every good web browser offers basic password management functionality. However, if you use several different devices, then you want something readily available on multiple platforms.

A good password manager provides just that, and along with that, it offers several other features like sharing your login details with your family members or friends.

They also have some premium features like Dashlane and LastPass, which will automate the password of changing your passwords for you. But this automation only works for few websites. If you want our recommendation, then don’t go for that one.

Also, few functionalities are locked behind the monthly subscription. LastPass charges $3/month, whereas Dashlane charges $4/month. But it is also worth knowing that you need the premium pass so that you can sync multiple devices. This can be very frustrating because there are very few things of use, and while there are other features like VPN in the Dashlane, which you won’t have any use of.

Beyond Password Management

There are other things that you have to keep in mind, like you have to activate the two-factor authentication. While doing this, you ensure that you add an extra hurdle for malicious users before they can gain access to your account if you want to go a step further in security by adding a hardware-based authentication device like YubiKey.

Now once you have added these measures, you can rest easy knowing that one simple hack won’t affect your entire digital identity. So, if you want to sleep easy at night knowing your passwords are safe, you should try password managers in 2021. Hope you look into password managers to manage your passwords from now on.
