SALT LAKE CITY -- Trey Burke finally had an opportunity to show why the Utah Jaz

SALT LAKE CITY -- Trey Burke finally had an opportunity to show why the Utah Jazz wanted him so badly. Santiago Arias Jersey . The Jazz traded two first-round picks to get The Associated Press college player of the year from Michigan on draft night in June but have been waiting anxiously to see him on the court. "Playing in those big moments in high school and college prepared me for this moment. I just wanted to play with confidence at the end," the point guard said after his first appearance at home. Burke made a key 3-pointer to help the Utah Jazz outlast Chicago 89-83 in overtime Monday night -- the Bulls first game since learning Derrick Rose would again be lost for the season. "I watched the young guy when he was in college at Michigan doing some spectacular things. He came to the court tonight and played a huge game in the most minutes hes played as a pro," said Marvin Williams, who led Utah with 17 points. Burke, who is finally enjoying extensive playing time after spending most of the season recovering from finger surgery, had 14 points and six assists. He also had five turnovers and shot 5 for 17 but was on the court in clutch time directing the Jazz to their second win of the season. "I certainly wasnt playing well in the beginning. I missed some shots and missed some guys who were open," Burke admitted. The Jazz expect some mistakes from the youngster but their forgettable start to the season leaves them hoping for a newfound dimension to their team. "The young fella is good and hes only going to get better. Hes in a tough spot right now as most rookies are just starting to get their rhythm but hes just getting going and therell be a learning curve," said Richard Jefferson, who had 15 points. Burke kept attacking even after he came up empty on several occasions. "Coach told me, Youre going to make some mistakes. Just learn from them and play confident out there." Burke said. Carlos Boozer had 26 points and 16 rebounds and Luol Deng added 24 points for the Bulls, who were exhausted in their fourth game in five nights and still processing the loss of Rose for the season. Hayward, who had a career-high 12 assists, helped the Jazz scored the first seven points of overtime. After Burkes 3-pointer in overtime, Hayward threw an alley-oop to Jeremy Evans for a dunk that made it 85-78 with 1:24 left in the extra period. "Im in a slump with my shot so Im trying to be more of a playmaker," Hayward said. Joakim Noah had 10 points and 13 rebounds for the Bulls, who lost their fourth straight and are just 1-7 on the road. "We go to snap out of it. We are human and we are disappointed in the way we are playing and disappointed in everything that is going on," Noah said. With the game tied at 78, Hayward dribbled down the shot clock and launched a step-back, 16-foot jump shot that barely drew iron. Deng, who scored 11 of his 24 points in the fourth quarter, missed a contested jumper and Boozers follow attempt rimmed out at the regulation buzzer. Rose was the only Bull who could consistently create his own shot and his teammates struggled to find good looks against Utah, shooting just 39 per cent. "Weve got to find ourseleves," Chicago coach Tom Thibodeau said. In the third quarter against the Portland Trail Blazers Friday, Rose lost his footing without contact while trying to change direction. He limped across the court and couldnt put any weight on his knee. After the Blazers scored, he came out of the game and, on Monday morning, had surgery for a torn meniscus. Throughout last season, the Bulls hoped for Rose to return from off-season left knee surgery. His recovery often took centre stage while his teammates reached 45 wins and the second round of the playoffs despite other major injuries. In the 2012 playoffs, top-seeded Chicago lost a first-round series to Philadelphia after Rose tore his ACL. Utah, which was blown out at Chicago on Nov. 8, broke a six-game losing streak against the Bulls. The Jazz played without second-leading scorer and rebounder Enes Kanter due to a sprained right ankle but they played with intensity at the end. The Chicago offence was anything but fluid yet they trailed only 56-52 before the Jazz went on an 8-0 run. Hayward converted a three-point play for Utahs largest lead of the game at 64-52 with 2:08 left in the third quarter. That margin marked the widest one the Jazz have enjoyed since the first quarter in Boston on Nov. 6, a game they lost 97-87. Jeremy Evans made back-to-back baskets for the Jazz early in the final period to make it 68-58. The Bulls turned up the defensive pressure and the Jazz wilted with two turnovers and eight consecutive misses as they failed to score for a stretch of 6:17. Boozer capped a 13-0 spurt with an elbow jumper and Chicago led for the first time since the first quarter. "We were in position to win tonight. Weve got to close out better," Thibodeau said. But the young Jazz fought back and then outscored the Bulls 11-5 in overtime. NOTES: Noah clapped and shouted at official J.T. Orr to earn a technical midway through the second quarter. He continued yelling and pointing at Orr but fellow official Tony Brothers physically escorted Noah to the Chicago bench. ... Heinrich played an offensive and defensive possession in the third quarter without one shoe when a he lost it during a loose-ball scramble. ... A few minutes later, Heinrich was issued a flagrant foul, penalty 1 when he hit Lucas in the head on a fast-break layup. ... It was the first overtime game for both teams. Marlos Moreno Jersey . On Sunday, head coach Patrick Roy said the teams leading scorer will skate at Mondays morning practice and the club will make a decision on his status for Game 6 at that point. Frank Fabra Jersey . Not that he was complaining. Davis had 13 points, nine rebounds and a career-high eight blocks, and the New Orleans Pelicans emphatically snapped a three-game skid with a 135-98 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers on Saturday night.BALTIMORE – Theres something about the pitching mound at Oriole Park. After losing Brett Cecil to groin tightness on Friday, the Blue Jays watched as R.A. Dickey removed himself from the game in the seventh inning on Saturday with the same problem. Dickey insisted the decision to excuse himself was as much preventative as anything else but the sight of the knuckleballer trudging off the field cast a further pall on a 3-2 loss to the Orioles. "I didnt want to jeopardize my next start," said Dickey. "I was probably out of the game after that next batter anyway so I decided it was probably in everybodys best interest to call it a day." The Blue Jays conclude their four-game set in Baltimore on Sunday and have an off-day on Monday before opening up a three-game series in New York. Dickey isnt scheduled to work again until Saturday in Cincinnati and hes hopeful the extra day will provide enough time for a full recovery. He saw a doctor after leaving the game and the diagnosis left Dickey feeling optimistic. He admitted, however, that he has never had a groin injury and therefore had no comparable to assess the degree of the problem. Meantime, Adam Lind fouled a pitch off the top of his right foot in the sixth inning. He finished the at-bat against Orioles starter Bud Norris, grounding out, and didnt return when his designated hitters spot came up again in the eighth. Dioner Navarro took his place. X-rays were negative, its a bone bruise, but Lind was noticeably hobbling after the game. "You can see the seams," said Lind of the bruise. "I didnt have a shin guard on or a foot guard so Ill be wearing one in the near future," said Lind. "I hit it pretty good. I hit it right on the sweet spot so it wasnt a soft liner off my foot. It was a pretty good one." Lind will ice the injury on Saturday night and didnt rule out playing on Sunday, although to the observer that would seem unlikely. Offensive Struggles Torontos offensive slump continued on Saturday. While the Jays got nine hits off five Orioles pitchers, the club stranded five runners in scoring position on the afternoon. Jose Bautista was thrown out at home trying to score from first base on Edwin Encarnacions one-out double in the eighth. Baltimore led 3-1 at the time. Chalk it up to a bad send by third base coach Luis Rivera, who was overaggressive in waving Bautista around, perhaps because everyone is pressing to try to generate runs. Toronto has lost six of eight games heading into Sundays series finale with the Orioles. At the time of this publishing, the Yankees were three games back of the Jays for top spot in the AL East (pending the result of their game on Saturday night in Oakland). Baltimore, in third place, closed the gap to three-and-a-half games. Left-hander J.A. Happ gets the Sunday start. The Orioles counter with right-hander Chris Tillman. McGowans First Save Dustin McGowan pitched the final inning and two-thirds of Friday nights 4-0 Blue Jays win over the Orioles, notching his first career big league save. He didnt know of his milestone, however, until after the game when Jose Bautista presented him with the baseball. The Jays led 4-0 in the eighth when McGowan replaced Brrett Cecil, who went down with a groin injury. Edwin Cardona Jersey. The Orioles had two runners on, meaning the tying run was in the on deck circle, qualifying McGowan for the save. "I usually do," said McGowan when told he didnt know the rules for a save. "When I came in, I was just focused on getting the batter out." McGowans first pitch came in a 1-2 count to Baltimore slugger Chris Davis. Davis, like probably most in the ballpark, was expecting a fastball. What he got was a changeup on the outer half of the plate with plenty of movement. He flailed and struck out. "Yeah it was a good pitch," said McGowan. "It was the best pitch I could throw in that situation and luckily it worked out." McGowan had never had a save. Had he had a one-pitch strikeout before? "I dont think Ive ever had one of those either," said McGowan. "Probably the last one of those I get, too." Whats clear in his tone of voice and in his body language is McGowans at peace with his permanent move to the bullpen. He thrived in the role last season and in 11 relief appearances this year, McGowans allowed one earned run in 13 1/3 innings (0.68 ERA) while striking out eight and walking only one. Manager John Gibbons has said repeatedly he believes the life of a short man will lengthen McGowans career. "I think hes right," said McGowan. "Im recovering a lot better out of the bullpen and Im not throwing 100 pitches, which makes it a lot easier." The role suits McGowans personality, too. Hell throw his fastball at 95 miles per hour without worry. "Thats one thing you can do out of the bullpen. You can let it go," said McGowan. "When I was starting, I had to reserve some in the tank. Its fun letting it go, too. Its how Ive always been so it kind of works out good for me." Jays Fast-track Santos Return A day after manager John Gibbons indicated Sergio Santos would remain with Double-A New Hampshire for a third rehabilitation appearance, Santos was back with the Blue Jays on Saturday. The reason: Brett Cecil has a groin injury and while he hasnt been placed on the disabled list, Cecil wasnt available for Saturdays game against the Orioles and Dustin McGowan, who threw 1 2/3 innings on Friday evening, was available in a limited role. Outfielder Darin Mastroianni was optioned to Triple-A Buffalo to make roster space for Santos. Cecil was feeling better on Saturday but wasnt sure whether he would require a trip to the disabled list. Manager John Gibbons cant have a short bench and a short bullpen at the same time so a decision will have to be made soon. "A couple of days," said Gibbons. "Were short on our roster too with a position player." Mastroianni and Kevin Pillar, both right-handed hitting outfielders, are inside the 10-day option window, meaning neither can return to the Blue Jays unless they replace a player whos gone on the disabled list. Pillar was part of a centerfield platoon with left-handed hitting Anthony Gose in the absence of Colby Rasmus. The absence of a dedicated fourth outfielder means Gibbons would turn to Steve Tolleson to take an outfield spot in the event a late-game replacement is needed.
