Panthers beat Rangers, set franchise record with eighth straight home

They stole games from elite teams and buried inferior ones. They executed on the power play and off the rush. Simply,Authentic Sidney Crosby jersey, the Panthers were nearly unbeatable at home since the All-Star break.

With Saturday night’s win against the Rangers, set in 2015-16,adidas Sidney Crosby jersey, the Panthers set a new franchise record for consecutive home wins with eight. The previous high was seven straight games, when the Panthers won the Atlantic Division championship.

“We’ve been winning different ways throughout this stretch here,” goaltender Roberto Luongo said. “That’s what good teams do.”

Frank Vatrano scored a goal in his Panthers debut as Jonathan Huberdeau and Jamie McGinn also scored for the Panthers. Luongo withstood a strong Rangers attack in the first period to steady the Panthers and finish with 34 saves on Saturday night.

Vincent Trocheck scored the game-deciding goal for the Panthers in the third round of the shootout, one round after Aleksander Barkov beat Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist. Trocheck swung wide to his left before deking and sliding a shot through Lundqvist’s legs.

Trocheck said he shot five-hole on Lundqvist when he faced him before, but felt enough confidence in his move to worry about his execution instead of Lundqvist’s reaction to it.

“Just had a move and stuck with it,” Trocheck said.

The Panthers also improved to 22-0-0 when leading after two periods. Florida pulled to within two points of Columbus for the second Eastern Conference wild card spot with three games in hand. The Devils beat Nashville in a shootout on Saturday night to remain three points up on the Panthers.

The Rangers largely controlled the first period, firing 15 shots on goal at Panthers goaltender Roberto Luongo in the period. They had three shots in the first 90 seconds and seven of the game’s first eight shots. Kevin Hayes forced Luongo to make a save on a shorthanded breakaway.

“It’s tough to be the dominant team for 60 minutes,” Panthers coach Bob Boughner said. “There’s going to be a back and forth. It’s about that composure that we talk about. Just trying to keep level-headed and find ways to get points.

But New York couldn’t break through. So even when they were outplayed, the Panthers entered the dressing room with a lead courtesy of Huberdeau.

tapping home a loose rebound on a power play. After Trocheck challenged Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist with a shot,Huberdeau scored with just 15 seconds remaining in the first period, the puck squeaked behind him and laid in the crease. Huberdeau pounced on the puck for his 22nd goal of the season.

Vatrano extended the lead 8:13 into the second period with his first goal since Nov. 11. After recovering from a high-ankle sprain that kept him on injured reserve, Vatrano skated on the second line with Huberdeau and Trocheck on Saturday night.

backhanded pass from the corner. Vatrano easily scored his third goal of the season,The trio enjoyed an extended possession in the Rangers zone before Trocheck fed Vatrano a no-look, injecting offense into the second line that has been partially missing since Denis Malgin suffered a knee injury on Feb. 24.

” Vatrano said. “When you go into a game knowing that the coach has trust in you,“I was just going out there and making the plays when they were in front me and not trying to be too high-risk, you can just go out there and play your game and not think about anything.”

The Rangers scored the next two goals, with Mats Zuccarello scoring with less than seven minutes left in the second period and Mika Zibanejad scoring just 17 seconds into the third period.

McGinn answered Zibanejad’s goal 45 seconds later by slamming home a rebound in the slot. Kevin Hayes tied the game with 7:25 left by sneaking a shot past Luongo’s blocker side inside the post.

“These wins are just like character wins, adidas Wayne Simmonds jersey, them tying the game late like that can get to you a little bit mentally. A lot of teams could just fold after that. The way we played after that,” Trocheck said. “We find a way to pull together whenever we have a little bit of a lapse. Obviously, we kind of took it to them.”

The Panthers are amid perhaps the most favorable part of their schedule. They swept a six-game homestand that ended on Sunday. A brief trip to Tampa on Tuesday wedged itself between that season-long homestand and the current five-game one.

plus bottom-feeders Edmonton, adidas Claude Giroux jersey,The Rangers are one of a series of non-playoff teams the Panthers will face soon. Florida faces Ottawa three times, Arizona and Buffalo in the final 17 games.

“Anytime we can establish a little bit of a home advantage, adidas Shayne Gostisbehere jersey, and we keep winning games at home, especially playoffs, it goes a long way, adidas Nolan Patrick jersey,” Trocheck said. “As long as fans keep coming out and getting loud for us, it’s going to be a huge advantage for us down the stretch.”

Nikita Kucherov scored in the fourth round of the shootout Saturday to lift the Tampa Bay Lightning to a 3-2 victory against the Montreal Canadiens.

Kucherov tied it late in the third period with his 34th goal of the season. Tyler Johnson scored his 20th of the season,Authentic Sidney Crosby jersey, and Louis Domingue made 27 saves and stopped three of four shooters in the shootout.

Brayden Point also scored in the shootout for Tampa Bay, his 10th conversion in 15 career shootout attempts.

led by general manager Pierre Dorion and owner Eugene Melnyk,It’s a day of reflection Wednesday for members of the Senators organization. The management team, and its players gather for their annual team photo.

a season which opened with such optimism will likely culminate in a bottom-five finish,Each year the photo acts as a gentle reminder of a club’s purveying successes or failures. In the case of the Senators, with the team currently sitting 29th overall in league standings.

“We are not looking to just tweak our lineup nor mortgage our future for stop-gap solutions. The kind of change required to reclaim our standing needs a change in approach,Melnyk wrote, requires difficult decisions and commitment to a plan.”

Does this commitment include a long-term deal for Karlsson? Does the 27-year old even want to remain a Senator? Both questions need forthright responses from each side of the negotiating table.

In the meantime, but it comes with a cost. No matter how many valued assets Dorion can procure, Dorion isn’t doing his job if he doesn’t entertain offers on Karlsson starting at the draft. A player of this much star power can bring the Senators multiple pieces, the inevitable loss of merchandise sales and ticket revenue has to be broached.

Averaging 1.08 points per game, despite missing nine games due a leg injury. At only 25-years old, Evgeny Kuznetsov and Alex Radulov. This lends the question, Stone’s offensive numbers draw similarities to Sean Couturier, Leon Draisaitl, Patrick Kane,Authentic Wayne Simmonds jersey, and is three points off his career plateau of 64 points, Stone has already surpassed his career high in assists (41),Authentic Claude Giroux jersey, how much will the Winnipeg native get paid? And, more pertinently, will Ottawa be willing to pay it?

Dorion has indicated he’d like to ink Ceci long term. However,Authentic Shayne Gostisbehere jersey, a shutdown d-man or a hybrid of both? Ceci’s 22:52 time-on-ice ranks second on the team to Karlsson. However, it’s still unclear where the 24-year old fits on the blue line. Is the Ottawa native a puck-mover,adidas Sidney Crosby jersey, his 44.36 Corsi rating mark ranks 101st out of 103 defencemen who’ve played 900 or more minutes this season.

Claesson will garner a qualifying offer,Authentic Nolan Patrick jersey, but he’s been a healthy scratch on 15 occasions. It remains to be seen if the affable Swede remains a fixture on the team roster next season.
